Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, located at the southern entrance to Squamish along the scenic Sea to Sky Highway, is home to the awe-inspiring Stawamus Chief (The Chief!). This 700-metre granite monolith is one of the largest in the world, providing not only breathtaking scenery but also a sanctuary for wildlife, including peregrine falcons. The park is renowned for its rock climbing opportunities of international significance, as well as its rewarding hiking trails that lead to three distinct summits.
Hiking the Three Peaks
First Peak (South Summit)
Distance: 1.5 km (one way)
Elevation Gain: 540 metres
Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours (one way)
The trail to the First Peak is the most popular and busiest. Starting from the trailhead, the path quickly ascends through a series of stairs and switchbacks. The hike is challenging, with steep sections and some scrambling near the summit. Once at the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of Howe Sound, Squamish, and the surrounding mountains.
Second Peak (Centre Summit)
Distance: 1.7 km (one way)
Elevation Gain: 590 metres
Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours (one way)
To reach the Second Peak, hikers follow the trail past the junction for the First Peak. This route involves more technical sections, including ladders and chains, which require careful navigation. The summit offers slightly less crowded views compared to the First Peak, with equally stunning vistas of the region.
Third Peak (North Summit)
Distance: 2.3 km (one way)
Elevation Gain: 630 metres
Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours (one way)
The trail to the Third Peak is the least frequented, making it ideal for those seeking a more solitary experience. This path continues from the Second Peak junction and includes a mix of forested areas and rocky scrambles. The Third Peak provides a tranquil spot to enjoy the expansive views in a quieter setting.

Be Prepared: Ensure you have adequate water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for varying weather conditions. The trails are steep and challenging, so sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential.
Respect Wildlife: Keep your distance from wildlife, particularly the nesting peregrine falcons. Use binoculars for viewing and adhere to posted closures of climbing routes during nesting season to avoid disturbing these birds.
Trail Conditions: The trails can be slippery, especially after rain. Pay attention to trail conditions and be prepared for scrambling sections with ladders and chains.
